Geography
The island, surrounded by the Andaman Sea, is located 890km (550 miles)
or a 70 minute flight south of Bangkok on Thailand's Coast. Measuring
49km (30 miles) long and 21km (13 miles) wide, and covering a total area
of 587km? (225 miles), it is approximately the size of Singapore. Draped
around it like a pearl necklace are an additional 70km (27 miles) of islands.
Environment
By contrast, the western coastline is of granite rock, which has been
sculpted by the waves into a series of 16 coves carpeted in powdery white
sand. The island is surprisingly hilly with several peaks rising to 500m
(1,640ft). Eleven percent of the interior area is forested.
People
Has a population of 250,000 people, 60,000 of whom live in town in the
south central part of the island. The rest of the population is concentrated
in town of no more than 3,000 - 5,000 people and in villages or houses
scattered in the rubber plantations and fields.
Industry
There are many tourism businesses and other related that people work for
on this island like accommodation services, travel services and more.
Other main incomes are from agriculture part like rubber plantations,
which was first introduced on this island since 1903. Other farms like
coconuts, pineapples, cashews and bananas are planted. Moreover, fishery
is one of an important part people do, that 's why you could get variety
fresh and delicious seafood here.
The best time to visit is during the cool NE monsoon season, from
November though March, when it isn't so humid, and the cool breezes keep
things comfortable. The average temperature is around 75ºF to 89ºF
(24ºC to 32ºC).
The hottest time is from April through May, with temperatures ranging
from 80ºF to 95ºF (27ºC to 36ºC). There are frequent
short heavy thundery showers, offering welcome relief from the temperature
and humidity. The Thai New Year occurs on April 13th and everyone sprinkles
(or throws) cool water on each other. No wonder!
Locals enjoy June, July and August, since the weather is usually
fine and our favourite haunts remain uncrowded. The usual pattern is brief
but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours. Everything
is a little less expensive at this time of year, as well. Temperatures
range between 70ºF and 90ºF (20ºC to 33ºC).
